The Difference Between Pingback and Trackback

I noticed that people would mix the ideas of pingback with trackback. Though they share something in common, they are different mechanism used by bloggers for recording and citation notice.

Pingback

This is used in blog system for noticing an author that one of his article has been cited by someone else.  The idea is, when you write an article,  in which you mentioned someone else’s blog link, so your system will notice that blog system you have mentioned it. Sequently, a pinkback comment will be automatically added to the article cited in a form ”your blog name - the context words surrounding that link within your article.

Trackback

Let’s take an example. Someone A wrote an article M, in which he mentioned something X. Another guy B wrote article N about X too after he saw article M.  B wants to let A know article N, so what he needs to do is just to send trackback to article M, which means B has to manually input the trackback address of article M when he composes article N.  A gets a comment in a form like ” B’s blog name, (title, excerpt)”.
